One of the visions I have been chasing since I decided to go back to school and get my teaching license is what kind of teacher I wanted to be. As I have donned and shed various teacher personas, I have sought the wisdom of others in the field. Following are 4 quotes I keep returning to, these words speak to me.
“Great minds discuss ideas, Average minds discuss events, and small minds discuss people.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt
“Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think.” ~Albert Einstein
“Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn and the doing is of such a nature to demand thinking; learning naturally results.” ~ John Dewey
“If education is always to be conceived a transmission of knowledge, there is little to be hoped from it in a bettering of (our) future. For what is the use of transmitting knowledge if the individual’s total development lags behind? The child [student] is endowed with unknown powers which can guide us to a radiant future. If what we really want is a new world, then education must take as its aim the development of these hidden possibilities.” ~Dr. Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind
*words in [] are my addition.
It is my mission to build lasting relationships with students, to exchange ideas, create acceptance, and foster playfulness while encouraging lifelong learning.
A work in progress, but a good start.
